Colonial-inspired landscape and gardens in Avon—June 2026

Those FCGN members and guests who attended our get-together on June 23, 2026 in the gardens of Barbara Scott feel lucky to have had this opportunity to spend a gorgeous summer evening in Barbara’s lovely gardens around her beautifully restored farmhouse in the scenic Avon farmland. That’s a lot of superlatives, but it felt like that kind of evening! Many people were asking Barbara about the history of the property, and she has kindly supplied the writeup that is found at the end of this email.

On Tuesday, June 23, from 6:30-8 pm, FCGN will visit the gardens of Barbara Scott in Avon, NY. Barbara Scott and her late husband Mike created this colonial-inspired landscape around their large stately home in the scenic farm country of Avon. The gardens here are defined by fencing, pergolas, walkways and stone walls that the Scotts have built over time. A Colonial Williamsburg–inspired herb garden welcomes visitors at the front door. Beyond, the main garden is enclosed by a hand-milled picket fence that reflects the era of the house, and a stone wall built to separate the garden from the driveway. A rose-covered arbor frames the entrance to a series of garden rooms, with broad borders of perennials. An allée of crabapples leads to a central boxwood parterre, where quadrants are planted with vegetables and flowers. There are artistic touches throughout – benches, pots, statues. Elegant containers accent both the garden and the terrace beside the house. Beyond the formal gardens, the Scotts planted a shelterbelt of trees and left the hay fields unmown to provide bird habitat, choosing trees with interesting bark and berries. Wherever you look, the views are enchanting.
